"With love to Gerald Brenan – David Garnett." LOVE AMONG THE HAYSTACKS includes an Introduction by David Garnett, written specifically for this edition after Lawrence’s death in 1930. This copy was removed from circulation, with “Out of service” noted in Garnett’s hand, and is not numbered, setting it apart from the standard run of 2,000 copies. A highly personal artifact, passed between two major literary figures of 20th-century British letters. An extraordinary association copy connecting Lawrence (through Garnett) to Brenan—two important literary voices of the era. Binding: Original mustard cloth-covered boards with contrasting brown cloth spine. Black title block stamped in gilt on spine. Rubbings at the head and foot of spine as well as on the sides. Interior: All pages exhibit significant foxing, consistent with age. Binding remains sound. No dust jacket, as issued. 8vo 9½" tall x 6", 98+ pp. David Garnett, novelist, editor, and member of the Bloomsbury Group, best known for Lady into Fox and as the son of Edward Garnett (an early champion of Lawrence). Gerald Brenan, renowned for The Spanish Labyrinth and South from Granada, was deeply embedded in the Bloomsbury circle and one of Lawrence’s significant contemporaries. He lived in Spain for much of his life and hosted numerous artists and writers, including Lawrence himself. Their correspondence revealed a deep intellectual and personal connection. .
