The dust jacket is printed in black and orange. Protected in mylar. Ling Shuhua was not only a writer but also an artist. However, her decision to write Ancient Melodies in English, a language in which she was not entirely fluent, was guided by her friendship with Vita Sackville-West, a member of the Bloomsbury Group, who provided editorial guidance and wrote the book’s introduction. Sackville-West’s involvement lent the memoir an added layer of prestige and connected it to the vibrant literary scene of postwar Britain. Ling Shuhua is believed to have had a romantic relationship with Julian Bell, the nephew of Virginia Woolf during the mid-1930s when Julian Bell traveled to China to teach English literature at Wuhan University. A beautiful and rare addition for any serious Vita Sackville-West collector. .
