Irving Layton was Leonard Cohen's Mentor for many years. The poetic legacy of Layton is certainly threaded through Cohen's early writing. Their friendship began in Montreal, where they were both part of the city’s vibrant literary community. Layton, already an established poet, recognized Cohen’s talent early on and encouraged him to pursue poetry and find his unique voice. .
