Schulberg wrote the 1954 Academy Award winning screenplay for "On The Waterfront" on which the book is based and which also won Best Picture for a total of 8 Oscars. The film directed by Elia Kazan, about mob violence and corruption among longshoremen, has become a standard of its kind. It stared Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb & with Marlon Brando in his Academy Award-winning role as ex-boxer, Terry Malloy. "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender, instead of a bum".
