Known for his sober and elegant style, Uninsky was born in Kiev and studied in Kiev at the conservatory along with Vladimir Horowitz before moving to Paris to continue his studies. He won the 2nd International Chopin Piano Competition in 1932 and subsequently became known for his Chopin interpretations and recordings. Alexander Uninsky eventually made his way to North America where he taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music beginning in 1955 and then later at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he died. Uninsky writes in his tribute; “To Mr Theodore E. Steinway, my warmest congratulations and best wishes of prosperity and continuing success. I am always happy and grateful to play the incomparable Steinway piano. Alexander Uninsky. July 1953, Newe York” Signed tribute to Steinway & Sons. New York: 1953. In 1953 Steinway celebrated its Centennial & Steinway artists from around the globe wrote congratulatory tributes which were sent to Theodore E. Steinway (1883-1957), piano technician, philatelist and son of Henry E. Steinway, piano technician and the founder of Steinway & Sons. One page typed ALS on plain white letterhead signed: Fine condition. .
