Greene, Graham [Cousins, Sheila] - To Beg I Am Ashamed. The Authentic Autobiography of a London Prostitute

Title: To Beg I Am Ashamed. The Authentic Autobiography of a London Prostitute
Description: New York, The Vanguard Press, 1938. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First US Edition. Co-authored by Greene with Ronald Matthews. Greene writing as Sheila Cousins. In England, the book published by Routledge, was suppressed. The "The Public Morality Council", alerted by reviews notified the Home Secretary who pressured Routledge to withdraw the book. There was quite a stir and Greene literally took off to Mexico at the time to avoid a potential libel action. As a consequence to Greene collectors, the UK 1st book is as rare as the rarest of Greene titles, especially in any sort of dust wrapper. After Routledge withdrew the book and pulped the run, it was published in Paris, June, 1938 by Jack Kahane, father of Maurice Girodias. Another edition was published in London in 1954. This is the True First US 1938 edition and very scarce in its own right and not often seen in dust wrapper. A very good or better copy showing a bit of fade to the extremities of the delicate blue cloth, partial binding offsetting at the endpapers, in an excellent original dust wrapper showing minimal use, and a touch of foxing, still about fine . Not including in Roland Wobbe's GG bibliography. A very nice copy. /Dust Jacket Included.
