In 1953 Steinway celebrated its Centennial and Steinway artists from around the globe wrote congratulatory tributes which were sent to Theodore E. Steinway (1883-1957), piano technician, philatelist and son of Henry E. Steinway, piano technician and the founder of Steinway & Sons. Signed by author, Douglas Moore, he goes on to write, “Greetings to Theodore Steinway and all the Steinways past and present who have contributed so richly to the music of our country and of the World”. Famed American composer, musician, and conductor, Moore studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Vincent d’Indy amongst others. His early career began in Cleveland where he continued his compositional studies with Ernest Bloch eventually making his way to Columbia University in New York where he conducted the Orchestra. Moore’s opera “Giants of the Earth”, 1951, received the Pulitzer prize for music and was followed by his most famous work, which premiered in 1956, another opera, “Ballad of Baby Doe” which included elements of the African American musical experience namely Jazz and Ragtime. .
