This work was awarded the ''grand prix des sciences physiques pour 1846'' by the Academie des Sciences for its thorough research on the anatomical and physiological development of the bird and batrachian foetus, and must be regarded as one of the great classics in (chemical) embryology. Martin Saint-Ange was a very fine artist as well, and these plates are among the finest embryological illustrations ever produced.
