Title: The Colour Curtain. A Report on the Bandung Conference
Description: London : Dennis Dobson, 1956.. Foreword by Gunnar Myrdal. First edition 188 p HARDCOVER: (Orig.black gilt. cloth, Name on end paper. Bit browning.Dust jacket small tear. VERY GOOD) ¶ RARE and SOUGHT AFTER, particularly this first edition. This indispensable work urging removal of the color barrier remains one of the key commentaries on the question of race in the modern era. First published in 1956, it arose from Richard Wright's participation in a global conference held in Bandung, Indonesia, in April 1955. With this report of what happened at Bandung, Wright exhorts Western nations, largely responsible for the poverty and ignorance in their former colonies, to destroy racial impediments and to work with the leadership of the new nations in moving toward modernization and industrialization under a free democratic system rather than under Communist totalitarianism. Richard Nathaniel Wright (September 4, 1908 - November 28, 1960) was an American author of sometimes controversial novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction. Much of his literature concerns racial themes, especially those involving the plight of African Americans during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. Literary critics believe his work helped change race relations in the United States in the mid-20th century.
