The author was a professor of the Arabic language in the University of Leiden in Holland. He travelled to Arabia in 1884-85, and he had the opportunity to live in Maccah for six months and in Jeddah for another six months. The life and works of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) mark an important period of the European study of Islam and of Dutch colonial history. Both subjects can hardly be studied properly without taking into account the role played by Snouck Hurgronje. Among the most important sources his personal letters to his family, friends and colleagues.
