The uses of the contemporary table are so far removed from those of previous centuries that one can only be intrigued by the abundance and strangeness of objects that have now disappeared. This work begins at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, which saw the culmination of a long evolution begun in Antiquity and continued in the Middle Ages, periods when plates and cutlery were not yet used. This is also the time when the dining room appeared. The 19th century continued the development of tableware, making them benefit from technical progress, progress in agriculture, not to mention the way of serving (Russian service replacing so-called French service). Nothing will be the same after the upheavals of the Second World War and the evolution of the society that resulted from it: generalization of women's work, interweaving of the dining room and the kitchen, development of restaurants, etc. Design then took over the field of tableware, taking into account these new elements. Les usages de la table contemporaine sont si éloignés de ceux des siècles précédents qu'on ne peut qu'être intrigué par l'abondance et l'étrangeté d'objets aujourd'hui disparus. Cet ouvrage commence à la fin du règne de Louis XIV qui vit l'aboutissement d'une longue évolution commencée dans l'Antiquité et poursuivie au Moyen åge, périodes où assiettes et couverts n'étaient pas encore utilisés. C'est d'ailleurs l'époque où apparut la salle à manger. Le XIXe siècle a poursuivi le développement des objets de table, les faisant bénéficier des progrès techniques, des progrès dans l'agriculture, sans parler de la façon de servir (service à la russe remplaçant le service dit à la française). Plus rien ne sera semblable après les bouleversements de la seconde guerre mondiale et l'évolution de la société qui en est issue : généralisation du travail des femmes, imbrication de la salle à manger et de la cuisine, développement des restaurants, etc. Le design s'est ensuite emparé du domaine des arts de la table en tenant compte de ces éléments nouveaux.
