Curious man, traveling painter, concerned about the truth of men, François Auguste Biard (1799-1882) is one of the forgotten representatives of romantic painting. Famous in the 1840s for his comic genre scenes, he is recognized today for his landscapes of the Frozen Ocean or the Amazon, and hailed for his works denouncing the slave trade or taking an interest in madness. Thanks to numerous unpublished works, this first monograph to be devoted to him restores the incredible diversity of his career.
