He can be considered "the most celebrated Pacific explorer after Cook..at heart a frustrated anthropologist, long before the profession had been invented.." (E.S. Dodge). The Corvette "Astrolabe", with its crew of 79, of which ten died, thirteen deserted, and twenty had to be left behind on various islands, around the Cape of Good Hope, visited a.o., islands in the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, and a plethora of Islands in Sulawesi and the Moluccas. Two of the interesting plates show a.o.
