Description: 1810 16 pp. 4to. 19th century boards, spine gilt lettered. Weimar, n. pr., 1810. First edition, second issue privately printed in 300 copies only upon the occasion of the celebration of the birthday of the Duchesse Louise of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and the engagement of Princess Caroline with the Hereditary Prince of Mecklenburg. It starts with the poem "Von Wartburgs Höhn, wo vor so manchen Sonnen ..". This is one of the finest documents of the beginning of Goethe's transition from the Classic to the Romantic. In the premiere of 3rd February Goethe played the "hero poet" and his close girl friend Charlotte von Stein the "summer". The ballads were performed to a Royal figure as King Rother, or Siegfried and Brunhild.
