First edition. A second, undated edition appeared in the same year. It was the poet (1878-1956) who suggested to the publisher to use his brother Karl's (1877-1942) illustrations. His siblings and Robert Walser himself served as models for the characters of the partially autobiographical "The Tanners", one of the most important pieces of early 20th century German literature.
