Description: Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1863. Large 8vo (26.2 x 18.3 cm). viii, 537 pp.; several steel engravings in the text, 12 steel engraved plates (tissue-guarded). Contemporary quarter morocco over marble boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-stippled bands; compartments with gilt borders, floral vignettes, and title. Marbled endpaperd = Travelogue of a journey by Prince Napoleon in 1856 to Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, Norway, and Sweden on board the corvette "La Reine Hortense". The author, Edmund Franciszek Maurycy Chojecki (1822-1899) "...was a Polish journalist, playwright, novelist, poet and translator. Originally hailing from Warsaw, from 1844 he resided in France, where he wrote under the pen name Charles Edmond. In 1856 he became secretary to Louis Napoleon, who in 1852 had become Emperor Napoleon III of France" (Wikipedia). This is the second edition, consisting of the narrative; the first edition (1857) mainly contained scientific results. The view of Reykjavik is not opposite p. 84 (following the plate index), but placed opposite the title, as frontispiece. Another early view shows Godthaab (Nuuk), the capital of Greenland. Boards rubbed, especially at edges; cattered foxing, mostly to tissue guards. Otherwise very good. Scarce. Currently only one other copy on the internet.
