Title: Illustrations of the North American species of the genus Catocala.
Description: New York, NY, American Museum of Natural History, 1918. Very large 4to (35.0 x 27.5 cm). Title page, 47 pp.; 22 plates of which 17 in fine chromolithography. Near contemporary pebbled half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = A very scarce monograph with numerous detailed illustrations of adult butterflies, caterpillars and eggs. Probably the print-run was low, as we have seen this work only once before. Written by the American surgeon and entomologist William David Barnes (1860-1930) and the Canadian linguist, violinist, and fellow-entomologist James Halliday McDonnough (1877-1962). Provenance: inscribed in the top margin of the title page by Sdelphe and dated August 1948, and his stamp elsewhere on the title, and on the front pastedown. Pictorial full colour bookplate, without a name, mounted on the front free endpaper verso. Boards worn at edges; a few short, marginal tears; otherwise very good, clean. A very good copy. Neither in Nissen ZBI, nor in Cat. BM(NH).
