Description: London, The Linnean Society of London, 1869. 8vo (22.0 x 14.0 cm). 659 pp. Contemporary green half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with five raised bands, gilt title. Brown endpapers. Edges speckled red. = Rare original edition, with an notable provenance. The earliest known description of the mosses of the Amazone region and its tributaries, including parts of the Andes, from the extensive collections made by Spruce and by Weir, Burchell which are held in the Herbarium at Kew. Many are newly described. The geographical sections are divided as follows: Flumen Amazonum, Fluvium Negro, Flumen Orinoco, Andes Quitenses sive Aequatoriales, Andes Peruvianae. Concluded with a large index. Published in the Society's Journal, Botany section, volume 12. Provenance: an attractive botanical bookplate, of the Mancunian botanist Charles Bailey (1838-1924), on the front pastedown. Bailey lectured on weeds, and donated his herbarium to Manchester University. Spine bands and ends a bit worn, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 6137.
