Author: Whitman, C. O. Title: Inheritance, fertility and the dominance of sex and color in hybrids of wild species of pigeons. Posthumous works of Charles Otis Whitman. Edited by Oscar Riddle. Volume II. [Orthogenetic evolution in pigeons].
Description: Washington, DC, The Carnegie Institution of Washington 1919. Large 4to (29.3 x 23.4 cm). x, 234 pp.; 39 plates of which 23 finely chromolithographed. Original blind-stamped blue cloth with gilt title on the spine. = This is a splendid copy of the second of three volumes of posthumous works by the American ornithologist and ethologist Charles Otis Whitman (1842-1910). All three are very uncommon. They deal with different subjects and this volume is arguably the best-illustrated. "Over the course of his career, Whitman worked with more than 700 species of pigeons, studying the relationship between phenotypic variation and heredity" (Wikipedia). A must for anyone interested in doves and pigeons. Weak offsetting of the colour plates to the opposite rear blanks, otherwise an excellent, clean and unmarked copy.
