Description: Berlin, Nicolai, 1849. One Volume in two. 8vo (21.5 x 13.0 cm). 843 pp. [viii, 387; 448]; eight engraved plates (one larger, folded). Contemporary uniform brown half leather over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spines. Marbled endpapers. = This is an early volume of the important natural history journal (a.k.a. Wiegmann's Archive) founded by Arend Friedrich August Wiegmann (1802-1841), and edited by the German malacologist Franz Hermann Troschel (1810-1882). The work consists of two parts: original contributions (in one volume), and in the second volume a review of what has been published in the various fields of natural history in the previous year, 1848. From 1864 onwards the "Zoological Records" covered the same subject, but before that date the Wiegmann's Archive was the only comprehensive source of bibliographical natural history data. Includes, e.g., an obituary of the second editor (after Wiegmann), Wilhelm Ferdinand Erichson; and a work ,on the orangutan skull. Of malacological interest are a paper on bivalve shells and pearls by Jacob Nöggerath, a paper on boring molluscs by Albany Hancock, and F. H. Troschel's Ueber die Mundtheile einiger Heliciden (with a plate). Subsequently, Troschel became the leading authority on radulae publishing numerous other papers on this subject. Provenance: small stamp of the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle on the title page. Boards rather worn - the gilt bands and titles abraded; some scattered light spotting, a few leaves creased in the upper outer margin, otherwise very good, complete.
