Description: Moskva, Izdatel'stvo Akademii Nauk SSSR, 1959-1969. Three parts in three. 8vo. (25.7 x 17.0 cm). 1,078 pp. [208; 391; 479]; 861 text illustations [108; 324; 429], one very large, folded map. Original, uniform printed cloth. Printed errata leaf tipped in. = One of the rarest series of the Fauna SSSR (Russia, Siberia, some adjacent countries and seas), dealing with marine fish from the Sea of Japan and the neighbouring Sea of Okhotsk and the Yellow Sea. The illustrations of whole animals and taxonomically important parts are excellent. Published in three parts, the second in 1965. The first author, Georgii Ustinovich Lindberg (1894-1976) was arguably the most important 20th century Russian ichthyologist. The commander skate, Bathraja lindbergi, Ishijama and Ishihara, 1977, was named in his honour. Of this work there is a (partial) translated edition (Israel, 1968), but this is the very rare original. Provenance: Handwritten dedication by the first author to the American ichthyologist Robert H. Gibbs Jr. (1929-1988) on the front free endpaper rectos of the second and third volume; stamp of Gibbs on the front free endpaper recto of the first volume. Some rubbing to corners, otherwise a very good, clean set.
