Title page, half-titles, iii-xvi, 268 pp.; three maps and views, of which one larger, folded, and two in chromolithography; seven lithographed plates showing fossil corals and foraminifers, several fine text illustrations. Turn of the century olive buckram with gilt title on the spine. Speckled edges. = An important, early, and well-illustrated account of the geology and palaeontology of the Cape Province, South Africa (with one uncoloured geological map), Saint Paul's Island in the Southern Indian Ocean (with one large folded, coloured geological-topographical map showing volcanism, as well as two views and two profiles); Java (the frontispiece showing the crater of the active Kawa Ratu volcano), and the isolated Stewart Atoll (Sikaiana, Solomon Islands) with a fine, coloured map with profiles and a peculiar rock formation with rich tropical plant growth. The palaeontological part with contributions by A. E. Reuss on fossil corals from Java (three plates), and by Conrad Schwager on fossil foraminifers from Car Nicobar (four plates). Boards worn at corners and hinges, front hinge lower end starting; library label on front pastedown, but no other markings. Internally a very good, clean copy. Very uncommon. Nissen ZBI, 4750.
