Title: Mollusken. [in: R. Semon (ed.). Zoologische Forschungsreisen in Australien und dem Malayische Archipel].
Description: Jena, Gustav Fischer, 1894. Folio (36.0 x 27.9 cm). Title page, 14 pp. [numbered 83-96]; one lithographed, partly coloured plate (numbered IV). Later burgundy pebbled cloth. = The complete Mollusca-section of the Zoologische Forschungsreisen in Australien und dem Malayische Archipel, being part 5(VI), published in the Denkschriften der medicinisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft zu Jena, but with its own, separate title page. The material was collected by the German explorer, zoologist and evolutionary biologist Richard Wolfgang Semon (1859-1918), a pupil of Ernst Haeckel. Semon was "...a memory researcher who believed in the inheritance of acquired characteristics and applied this to social evolution. He is known for coining the terms engram" (Wikipedia). Von Martens described several species as new, especially from the Torres Strait and Queensland, making this a rare and little-known piece of Australiana. Not in Ferguson (who lists Semon's travelogue only). Kabat and Boss (1997) Karl Eduard von Martens (1831-1904): his life and Works, p. 88. Not in Nissen.
