Description: Washington, DC, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Division of Entomology, 1888-1891. Three volumes in three. 8vo (21.6 x 14.5 cm). Near uniform pebbled calf over pebbled, gilt-bordered boards. Spines with gilt ornamented raised bands. = The rarely seen start of this periodical, which was discontinued in 1895 after seven volumes. With on the front pastedowns the pictorial bookplate of the American entomologist John Henry Comstock (1849-1931). Quite peculiary, Comstock himself later published a similar titled work, viz. Insect life. An introduction to nature-study and a guide for teachers, students, and others interested in out-of-door life. With full-page plates from life reproducing insects in natural colors, and with many original illustrations engraved by Anna Botsford Comstock, member of the Society of American Wood Engravers. (1901). Some wear to the bindings, the third volume with a slightly different spine cover. Not in Horn-Schenkling II.
