Description: Regensburg, Heinrich Gottfried Zunkel, 1766. 4to (24.6 x 19.5 cm). Title-page, dedication leaf, 28 pp.; one beautifully hand-coloured engraved plate. Early 20th-century greenish-grey buckram. Spine with black morocco strip with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = First edition. Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1754-1828) was a clergyman-naturalist, a phenomenon characteristic of the Enlightenment. He published a number of illustrated natural history works, mostly on insects, but also on birds and fungi of southern Germany. The present work describes several insects of southern Germany, especially the region around Regensburg. Schaeffer's exact descriptions and fidelity of illustration made his contributions to entomology a mine of information and brought it to the attention of scientists and royalty throughout Europe. The delicately handcoloured plates depict eight beetle species including two Coccinellidae, and four hymenopterids. Peculiarly, Horn-Schenkling lists the title as ending in "...diesfalls erinnert is". In the top margin of the first title a small printed label of "Bibliothèque d'Histoire naturelle de Dr Maurice Royer". Maurice Royer (1878-1942) was a French entomologist and Hemiptera-specialist. Boards soiled, mostly marginal spotting thoroughout; the title page and plate more extensively, irregularly toned. Otherwise a good, complete copy of this rare work. Horn-Schenkling, 19048.
