Description: Helsingfors, Societas Scientiarum Fennica, 1900-1906. Two papers in one. Large 4to (28.7 x 22.3 cm). 462 pp. [iv, 395; 63]; 68 [64; 4] lithographed plates with explanatory text leaves. Contemporary polished half calf over marbled board. Spine with gilt ornaments and green calf label with gilt title. = Seldom seen complete, well-illustrated and important monograph on the Oedogoniaceae, by the Finish botanist Karl Engelbrecht Hirn (1872-1907). Especially the supplement is rare. Hirn was specialized in algae, in particular these filamentous green fresh water algae. Unfortunately he died shortly after publication of the second work, which was the first of an intended series, and - according to Hirn himself - a supplement to his monograph. Front hinge tender at top end, otherwise excellent: very nicely bound, and with dedications by the author. Do not confuse with the inferior 1960 reprint. Nissen BBI, 887; Stafleu and Cowan, 2791.
