Author: Waals, J. D. van der Title: Sur les caractères qui décident de l'allure de la courbe de plissement dans le cas d'un mélange de deux substances. [AND] sur les conditions critiques, ou de plissement, d'un mélange.
Description: Haarlem, Les Héritiers Loosjes, 1896. 8vo (24.0 x 15.3 cm). 26 [13; 13] pp. Original printed wrappers. = Two important publications on the mixture of two substances, by the Dutch physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923). In these papers, he elaborates upon the theory of equilibrium. 'In 1890, van der Waals published a treatise on the Theory of Binary Solutions in the Archives Néerlandaises. By relating his equation of state with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, in the form first proposed by Willard Gibbs, he was able to arrive at a graphical representation of his mathematical formulations in the form of a surface which he called ? (Psi) surface following Gibbs, who used the Greek letter ? for the free energy of a system with different phases in equilibrium.' (Wikipedia). Published in the Archives Néerlandaises des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles, vol 30(3). The whole issue, with its original printed wrappers. Uncut. Wrappers with a few small spots and some minimal chipping to uncut fore-edge, otherwise very good, clean.
