The title translates as "Life in the Ocean after counting its inhabitants". The Plankton-Expedition was one of the major 19th-century zoological expeditions, on board the German steamer "National", to the Atlantic Ocean (1889). This concluding report was written by the expedition leader, Christian Andreas Victor Hensen (1835-1924). Hensen coined the term plankton and laid the foundation for biological oceanography (Wikipedia).
