Large 4to (30.8 x 25.5 cm). 244, [i] pp.; 112 text illustrations, 30 plates (two in full colour; one tinted) with explanatory text leaves. Original printed wrappers. = A massive, finely-illustrated monograph on marine worms which includes extensive descriptions and new species. It includes the results of three surveys and dredging operations by the U.S. Navy in the late 19th and early 20th century in the Eastern Pacific. The author, Wesley Roswell Coe (1869-1960) "...was a student of the celebrated zoologist [principly malacologist] A. E. Verrill, under the influence of whom he developed his central interest in the taxonomy and natural history of marine invertebrates, especially nemerteans (ribbon worms) and bivalves. Coe's studies ran the gamut, from investigations into embryology (especially change of sex), physiology and morphology (including anatomical regenerations) to studies at the population and biogeographic levels. He was especially known for his research on bathypelagic forms." (C. H. Smith). This is the Museum's Memoir volume XLIX. Nissen only records the volumes up to 1919. Uncut.
