Title: Études sur le terrain houiller de Commentry. Livre troisième. Faunes ichthyologique et entomologique.
Description: Saint Étienne, Théolier (for the Société de l'Industie Minérale), 1888. Small folio (32.5 x 24.9 cm; text) and folio (50.2 x 32.5 cm). Text volume: 38 pp.; 15 text illustrations, six very large, folded or double-folded lithographed plates [numbered I-VI]. Original printed wrappers.; plate volume: explanatory leaf to plates I-XVI; lithographed plates I-XVI. Printed wrappers to the 3rd series in general, and to the first part, on fish. = A rare and well-illustrated work on fossil fish by the French palaeontologists Charles Jules Edmée Brongniart (1859-1899) and Henri Émile Sauvage (1842-1917). Offprint from the society's Bulletin. Despite the title, and the fact that Brongniart is also known as an entomologist, this work does not include insects. It consists of two parts, a quarto text with the first six plates either folded, or double folded, and an atlas with 16 plates - including the first six again - plain, or folded once (i.e., folded one time less than in the text volume). Mysteriously, the front wrapper of the atlas contains a printed label with the following text: "Cet atlas qui doit comprendre 21 planches n'en contient que 18. Les planches X, XV, et XVI non achevées seront livrées prochainement". The plates X, XV, and XVI, however, are included. Apparently, the number of plates was finally brought down further from 18 to 16. Uncut. Spine with later black cloth cover. Atlas wrappers chipped at edges; text paper somewhat age-toned, otherwise very good. Dean I, p. 186 (not mentioning the Atlas).
