Description: London, Bell and Daldy, 1862. 4to (25.2 x 15.4 cm). viii, 192 pp., 72 chromolithographed plates and small engraved vignettes above each species description. Original green cloth. Front board with large gilt vignette and extensive blind stamped patterns; rear board the same, without gilt; spine similar, with gilt title. = First edition (second: 1871). Dedicated to Sir John Frederick William Herschel "respectfully dedicated, as a small token on the esteem in which this true philosopher is held". Printed erratum tipped in before the contents page. Monogrammed armorial bookplate "sure and stedfast", with lion's head on the front pastedown. Tiny bookseller's embossed stamp in the front free endpaper top margin; spine soiled, some minimal foxing; light creasing to a few plates, otherwise very good. Nissen BBI, 1245.
