Description: Berlin, the author, 1788. Folio-sized leaf (36.2 x 22.2 cm), with original printed and finely hand-coloured engraving of a famous pharmaceutical plant and spice (printed area 20.5 x 18.0 cm). = A delicately hand-coloured plate of a pepper plant, Capsicum annuum. Native to southern North America, the Caribbean, and northern South America, this species is the most common and extensively cultivated of the five domesticated capsicums. it is both of culinary and medical importance. This plate is numbered 49. The Pharmaceutica is a very rare work; it is seldom found complete and even individual plates of plants are rare. One pepper is shown half green, half red, representing the unripe and ripe state. A few weak creases, some minimal spotting and soiling, faint writing below the caption, ouside the printed surface, but generally in a very good, clean, condition with the original printing and colouring neat, detailed, accurate, and strong.
