Title: Illustrations of the North American species of the genus Catocala.
Description: New York, NY, American Museum of Natural History, 1918. Very large 4to (35.7 x 28.1 cm). 47 pp.; 22 plates of which 17 in fine chromolithography. Original printed wrappers. = A very scarce monograph with numerous detailed illustrations of adult butterflies, caterpillars and eggs. Probably the print-run was low, as we have seen this work only once before. Written by the American surgeon and entomologist William David Barnes (1860-1930) and the Canadian linguist, violinist, and fellow-entomologist James Halliday McDonnough (1877-1962). Uncut. Wrappers detached and chipped at edges due to the low-grade paper; with exeption of a short, repaired cut in one explanatory leaf, the text leaves and plates, however, are very good, clean. A very good copy. Neither in Nissen ZBI, nor in Cat. BM(NH).
