Spine with gilt title and ornaments. = In the mid-19th century, most parts of middle Sumatra, in particular the mountainous central part, were still "terra incognita" for westerners, whereas the coastal regions were fairly well-known, being more or less under Dutch rule for several decennia. This work contains an outline for an expedition to fill the voids, followed by the results of this expedition. Added is a Dutch translation of the only earlier expedition report on the area, by the British explorer Charles Campbell in the year 1800 (originally published in Marsden's "History of Sumatra)". Of great interest are de many large and detailed maps and views. Published as "Bijbladen, eerste deel" (annexes, first part) of the Tijdschrift van het Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (Journal of the geographical society). Tiny label on spine foot, small label remnant on front free endpaper recto, old library stamp on the second andd third title; scattered light, mostly marginal spotting, otherwise a very good copy in the very attractive, original, 'offical' binding. Rare in this excellent state.
