Gilt title on the spine. = A well-illustrated paper by the Italian zoologist (principally working on insects, fish, and molluscs) Oronzio Gabriele Costa (1787-1867), published around the time of his death. Apparently, it was the writer's goal to renew interest in the ear bones of fish as a means to identify recent and fossil species. In his introduction he mentions ten authors from the 17th and 18th centuries, but none after 1789. This is an offprint from the Atti della R. Academia delle Scienze Fisiche et Matematiche, volume III. Small paper cut and repair in the title page leaf, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Dean I, p. 273.
