Title: A synopsis of the fishes of North America.
Description: Cambridge and Boston, MA, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1846. 4to (30.5 x 24.6 cm). 298 pp. [numbered 253-550]. Original printed wrappers. = This is the first list of North American fishes ever produced, nearly forty years before the identically titled work by David Starr Jordan and Charles Gilbert. It includes marine fishes, e.g. from the Caribbean. In 1962, the Amsterdam bookseller and publisher Asher produced a reprint, but this is the rare original written by the American malacologist, ichthyologist, and Harvard's professor of obstetrics and medical jurisprudence, David Humphreys Storer (1804-1891). In the rear - not part of this paper - is a list of members of the Academy, including John Quincy Adams; honorary members, arranged by state; and foreign honorary members, including Charles Babbage, Sir Joseph Banks, William Buckland, William Herschel, etc., etc. This is the original edition, not the 1962 reprint. Front wrapper detached, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Dean II, p. 507.
