Title: Géologie et volcans éteints du centre de la France.
Description: Clermont-Ferrand, Ferdinand Thibaud, 1863. 8vo (22.6 x 14.6 cm). Two title pages, xvi, 254 pp.; 23 engraved, mostly large, folded plates (numbered I-XVII, 1-6. Plate 5 double, counted once). Original printed wrappers. = A fine, detailed study by the English geologist George [Julius] Poulett Scrope (1797-1876), who had a special interest in volcanos. The obvious importance, of the present work, to local geologists prompted the French botanist and geologist Éduard Vimont (1829-1903) into translating the work into French, using the second improved edition of the English original. It was published in the Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Clermont-Ferrand, 36 (or Nouvelle Séries, volume 5). Also present is the obituary of the French physician, botanist, geologist and volcanologist Pierre Dominique Auguste Peghoux (1796-1848). Two further local geological-geographical papers are "Note sur les grottes de Jonas" by Mallay, with five folded plates and maps, and "Indications pour servir à une carte géographique de l'Auvergne au moyen-âge" by A. Houzé. With the wrappers of this volume. A few light pencil underlinings, rather loosely bound (as issued), otherwise a very good, clean copy.
