In 1883 the author spent four months on Iceland in the company of another German geologist, Konrad Keilhack, who published on the phyto-palaeontology of the island, whereas Schmidt made a special study of the island's Liparite. Liparite is “an effusive rock similar in chemical composition to granite. The term “rhyolite” is [an often used synonym]. Liparite occurs as lava flows, volcanic domes, cinereous deposits, and ignimbrite strata. It generally exhibits a high glass content, but nearly holocrystalline varieties are also known to exist; it often contains porphyritic phenocrysts. Liparite occurs widely in all volcanic regions of the world; it is used for paving roads and for construction purposes” (vide thefreedictionary website).
