Two volumes in two (23.5 x 16.3 cm). 1,020 pp., five engraved portraits, ten folded maps [of which two tinted], numerous engraved plates and text figures. Original red quarter calf over red, gilt and black embossed pictorial boards. Marbled edges [to volume 2]. = Rare first (Swedish) edition of this famous voyage round Asia and Arctic Europe and of the first succesful scientific voyage through the polar regions of Siberia with the famous map called "Karta öfver Gamla verldens Nordkust frän Norge till Beringssund med Vega-expeditionenskurs" by N. Selander. Some pages have a small waterstain at the inner margin. The first German edition was from 1882 and first English edition was published not until 1885. Small old stamp and name of two different private owners on the front free endpaper, hinges of first volume cracked, some small repairs to the largest map, which due to its disproportional size has been cut in two with the western and eastern part tipped in separately, otherwise a nice copy.
