Title: Développements asymptotiques dans les equations différentielles linéaires à paramètre variable. [AND] Développements asymptotiques dans les equations différentielles linéaires à paramètre variable. Errata et addenda. [Inscribed by the author].
Description: Bruxelles, Hayez, 1912. 8vo (24.3 x 16.3 cm). 208 pp. Original printed wrappers. = A rarely seen copy, dated and dedicated by the author. Paul Noaillon (1875-1940) was an important scientist and mathematician in Paris between 1920 and 1940. His father, Alexandre Noaillon (1843-1916), was an engineer from Arts and Métiers, a chemist and photographer who was appointed director of a chemistry laboratory in Angleur near Liège about 1885 and settled in Belgium. Thus young Paul had his basic eduation in Liège. A Doctor of Science, Paul Noaillon had worked in Belgium, probably in hydrodynamics. His publications were in Belgian journals and were often of a great quality, in particular his memoir [1912] which is still cited in the literature. During the Great War he was in the engineering service of the Artillery. After the war, he became “attaché au Service technique de l’Artillerie”. Noaillon participated in the great Hadamard seminar at the Collège de France where he sat with the French mathematician Paul Lévy (1886-1971). His work was always original and it touched on various questions of analysis, in particular harmonic functions, and the equations of hydrodynamics, a subject that fascinated Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963). In 1929 he received the Academy’s prix Francoeur (with Hadamard as "rapporteur") and he went on publishing until his death in Paris in 1940. Noaillon handled with ease the integral of his contemporary compatriot Henri Léon Lebesgue (1875-1941). On this subject see [Lévy 1925d] which derived from a communication of Noaillon to the Hadamard seminar and re-proved the Fischer-Riesz theorem of 1907.[see: emis.de/journals/JEHPS/juin2009/BruEid]Inscribed and signed by the author on the front wrapper. Front wrapper somewhat soiled and loose, contents good, generally clean. Rare.
