Title: Note sur l'Elaphurus davidianus espèce nouvelle de la famille des cerfs.
Description: Paris, L. Guerin, 1866. Large 4to (32.0 x 24.5 cm). 6 pp., two engraved and finely hand-coloured plates. Later wrappers with printed label mounted. = The French missionary priest père Armand David (1826-1900) was one of the first to explore the fauna of China. He brought to light many new species, from tiny snails to some big mammals including the giant panda, and the species of deer described in this paper and which since then is known as père david's deer. David spotted the only surviving herd of this deer, presumably native to the temperate regions of China, in the Imperial Hunting Park of the Chinese emperor, south of Beijing. David was the first foreigner to set foot in the park. He managed to acquire a few animals which where shipped to the zoo of the Paris museum of natural history. Other animals were smuggled out of China to various places in Europe. The species became extinct in China in the same year that David died. This work was published in the Muséum's Nouvelles Archives, volumes 2. Uncut. A very good clean (no foxing) copy. Nissen ZBI, 4561.
