Description: Washington, Government Printing Office, 1875. Large 4to (28.8 x 23.1 cm). Titles to each section, pp. [10]-20, 511-633, 991-996 (reptiles), [13]-20, 635-703, 997-999 (fish), [7]-10, 13-21 (insects), 707-736 (ants), 739-794 (Lepidoptera), 797-827 (Coleoptera), 829-842 (Hemiptera), 845-908 (Orthoptera), 909-1021; 30 lithographed plates (numbered XVI-XLV), of which 14 in full colour. Contemporary black pebbled cloth, gilt title on spine. = This massive book deals with zoological observations and collections made between 1871 and 1875. The herpetology (chapters IV and V, together with 10 plates of which three finely hand-coloured) form a large part of this work. The fish, and the Insecta (with Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera) are well-represented too; smaller sections, without plates, are devoted to, e.g. Mollusca. The plain plates are mainly in the ichthyology section; two insect plates are uncoloured. The chapters I-III, which deal with mammals and birds, are not included. Some shelf wear with spine ends and rear joint worn; binding weak, endpapers cracked in gutter, old repair to front flyleaf (closed tear), otherwise - internally - a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 4756. Not in Dean.
