Author: Archiac, A. d' [É. J. A. D. de Saint-Simon] and J. Haime Title: Description des animaux fossils du groupe nummulitique de l'Inde précédée d'un résumé géologique et d'une monographie des nummulites [I].
Description: Paris, Gide et J. Baudry, 1853. Large 4to (32.1 x 24.8 cm). [iii], 223 pp.; 15 lithographed plates. Later blind cloth. = The first author's full name is Étienne Jules Adolphe Desmier de Saint-Simon, Vicomte d'Archiac (1802-1868), but he is also known as Vicomte d'Archiac (this paper), Saint-Simon, etc. The second author, Jules Haime (1824-1856) was a palaeontologist, invertebrate specialist and vice president of the French geological society. The major part of this work is on nummulites (with 11 plates), a smaller section is on Echinodermata (29 pp., three plates), and a third, still smaller section is is on "polypes" (corals, 12 pp, one plate). All contain excellent illustrations of well-preserved specimens, many belonging to new species described here. This seems to be the first part of two; Nissen calls for vi+373 pp., and 36 plates published in 1853-1854, but the part offerered here seems to be complete for the groups covered. The last plate rather soiled, another echinoderm plate stained on verso and with the lower inner corner frayed and chipped (far from the printing); part of the front flyleaf clipped. The old cloth cover soiled and rubbed. Nevertheless a good copy with the text pages and plates free of foxing. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 141.
