Nares, R.N., F.R.S. and the late captain Frank Tourle Thomson, R.N. prepared under the superintendence of the late Sir C. Wyville Thomson, Knt., F.R.S., &c. and now of John Murray. Zoology. Report on the Holothuroidea collected by H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873-76 - Parts I-II. [Complete].
Description: London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1882, 1886. Two parts in two. Large 4to (31.9 x 25.2 cm). 466 pp. [176; 290]; 62 [46, 16] lithographed plates with explanatory text leaves. Disbound but with original green cloth boards present. = From the famous series, The zoology of the Challenger Expedition, volume IV, part XIII (Part I of the work), and volume XIV, part XXXIX (part II of the work). Since this was about the first serious deep water expedition, the work contains numerous new species and genera, and even a new order, the Elasipoda. In the second part the author added a short exposition of the shallow water forms, filling a long existing gap. The author, Johan Hjalmar Théel (1848-1937) was a Swedish explorer, zoologist and university professor. "He studied at Uppsala University. He was also an artist and included his own illustrations in his published articles.... He was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1884. Théel became a lecturer at Uppsala University and was appointed professor of zoology in 1889. He was curator of the invertebrate department of the Swedish Museum of Natural History from 1892 to 1916 ... He also became director of the Kristinebergs Zoological Station at Fiskebäckskil in 1892, remaining in this post until 1908. Théel was asked to classify the sea cucumbers, class Holothuroidea, that had been collected during the Challenger expedition, a British scientific expedition that investigated the deep sea and its fauna. He published his findings in the Report on the Scientific Results of the Exploring Voyage of HMS Challenger 1873-76" (Wikipedia). Disbound from larger volumes with monographs on unrelated groups but bindings strong. Bookplate on the front pastedown; a few marginal spots to a few plates, otherwise a very good set. Needs rebinding. Rare, especially when complete and far superior to the later reprint. Nissen ZBI, 4107, 4754.
