Ten splendid chromolithographed plates, depicting minerals, a few finished by hand. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering. Patterned endpapers. Speckled edges. = Important and early contribution to the geology of Terra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan, with some fine maps, stunning photos and detailed images of minerals. On the occasion of the International Polar Year, 11 European countries and the US organised an expedition to the Poles in order to make geodesic and other scientific observations. The French team, lead by Lieutenant Payen and Dr Hyades visited Cape Horn. This is the full report on their geological observations. It is one of the rarer volumes.
