Nares, R.N., F.R.S. and captain Frank Tourle Thomson, R.N. prepared under the superintendence of the late Sir. C. Wyville Thomson, Knt., F.R.S., &c. and now of John Murray. Zoology. Volume XXIX. Report on the Amphipoda collected by H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873-1876.
Description: London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1888. One volume in three (two text parts and atlas). Large 4to (31.8 x 25.1 cm). 1,776 pp. [xxiv, 1-872; [ii], 873-1,737; xiii]; 212 lithographed plates with explanatory text leaves, 23 wood-engravings in the text, one folded map. Original uniform green cloth. Spines with gilt title. Dark brown endpapers. = A massive monograph from the famous series, The Zoology of the Challenger Expedition. Since the Challenger voyage was about the first serious deep water expedition, the work contains numerous new species. Written by the reverend Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing (1835-1926) "who described himself as "a serf to natural history, principally employed about Crustacea". Educated in London and Oxford, he only took to natural history in his thirties, having worked as a teacher until then. Although an ordained Anglican priest, Stebbing promoted Darwinism in a number of popular works, and was banned from preaching as a result. His scientific works mostly concerned crustaceans, especially the Amphipoda and Isopoda, the most notable being his work on the amphipods of the Challenger expedition."(Wikipedia). Well-illustrated. Rare, especially when complete. Bookplate on front pastedowns; bindings much worn, that of the first text volume stained and detached, as are several gatherings; title pages with library marks; the atlas waterstained throughout and the plates are a bit wavy - some are a bit foxed. We regard this as a working copy only. Nissen ZBI, 3964.
