Title: Mémoire pour servir à l'histoire du tapir et description d'une espèce nouvelle (le tapir pinchaque) appartenant aux hautes régions de la Cordillère des Andes.
Description: Paris, De Bachelier, 1835. 4to (25.6 x 20.2 cm). 90 pp.; three folded, lithographed plates. Contemporary gilt-lined half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised bands, gilt ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers. = A detailed study with careful descriptions, partly based on the osteology, and with comparisons to extinct species. A rare offprint from the Mémoires des Savans étrangers. Author is the French medical doctor, zoologist, explorer and illustrator - the first plate was drawn by himself - François Désirée Roulin (1796-1874). Roulin travelled through northern South America between 1821-1828. He also assisted George Cuvier in illustrating the latter's Regne animal, and Alcide d'Orbigny for his Voyage pittoresque dans les deux Amériques. Top of spine cover missing, small old stamp of De Saussure (probably the zoologist and entomologist H. De Saussure) on the first blank and in the title page margin, some light, scattered spotting throughout, otherwise a good copy. Not in Nissen ZBI, Wood, or any other major bibliography.
