Marbled edges. = A rare work by the influential German botanist Hugo [von] Mohl (1805-1872); the man who coined the word protoplasm. DSB: "After a century Mohl remains famous for his works on the microscopic anatomy of plants and for his contributions to knowledge of the plant cell. He studied medicine at Tübingen which concerned botanists throughout the 19th century." Title and preface bound in twice (once before the plates). Inscription in an old hand on the front pastedown, two old stamps on first title (second title clean); light, gradually fading dampstain in the text, unobtrusive foxing throughout. DSB vol. 9 p. 441. Neither in Nissen, BBI nor in Stafleu and Cowan.
