Author: Pogue, J. E. Title: The Turquoise. A study of its history, mineralogy, geology, ethnology, archaeology, mythology, folklore and technology.
Description: Washington, DC, National Academy of Sciences, 1915. 4to (30.5 x 24.0 cm). 162 pp.; one fine chromolithographed frontispiece with printed transparent overlay, 22 plates (one in full colour). Sligtly later gilt-bordered green half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = Important monograph on the gemstone turquoise, leaving no aspect undiscussed. It is one of a few minerals that has a colour named after it. This work was published in the Academy's Memoirs XII[II(3)]. The author, Joseph Ezekiel Pogue (1887-1971) was an American geologist, mineralogist and banker. We have seen other copies with the spelling Turquois, but otherwise identical. Very uncommon, and mainly found in wrappers or disbound, but this is a very luxuriously bound copy. The frontispiece is beautiful. Modern reprints are no match. Small cut in lower outer corner of the frontispiece, otherwise in an excellent condition. Sinkansas, 5176.
