Title: Duc d'Orléans. Campagne Arctique de 1907. Microplankton des Mers de Barents et de Kara.
Description: Bruxelles, Bulens, 1910. 4to (35.1 x 27.0 cm). 355 pp.; two maps of Nova Zembla; 37 fine, loose lithographed plates (numbered I-XXVI, Ibis), with their explantory text leaves, in a very good reproduction. Original wrappers and later blue half cloth portfolio with printed title on the front board. = A seldom-seen monograph dealing with microplankton from the Arctic Ocean. Many species are described as new. The Barents Sea is situated north of Norway and Russia, and west of Novaya Zemlya; the adjacent Kara Sea lies east of Novaya Zemlya. Both are among the fastest warming seas in the world, which makes this early survey of their plankton of great interest to climate scientists. The Duc d'Orléans, Louis Philippe Robert (1869-1926), financed this important French scientific expedition in 1907 and its reports, which were published in very limited numbers. The text volume is an unmarked original copy. The black-and-white illustrations are faithfully reproduced and neatly preserved in an attractively styled portfolio. Text volume covers a bit faded towards te edges, and on the spine; otherwise excellent. Cat. BM(NH) p. 831.
